Haskell's 20th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, February 22nd, 2003, RLT hosted a surprise party for our favorite Artistic Director, Haskell Fitz-Simons. It was a celebration of his 20 years in that position at Raleigh Little Theatre.  Here are photos from the evening.

In addition to the speakers who's photos appear below, the following people also spoke of their friendship with Haskell:

Twenty Haskells: A Study of the Fitz-Simons



 

The evening's playbill had the following caricature of Haskell (and a modified RLT logo) which was drawn by Cullum Rogers, and presented to Haskell, to celebrate the occasion.

Bill Trotman, a long-time family friend, reminisces about Haskell, his childhood, parents and family. He also told us to ask questions about Haskell's wealth of theatre knowledge.

 

Stuart Byham was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening

 

Maggie Bunce, as the person who has known him the longest, went over how they met

 

During Maggie's roasting, we saw a video of photos from Haskell's past. This was put together by Taylor Fitz-Simons, Haskell's nephew

 

The Oakwood Waits, the choral group that Haskell is a member of, sang the Banana Boat song

 

Haskell had to sit in his "roasting chair" all night while guest spoke of his years at the theatre and beyond.

 

Dee Penven-Crew performed a rap song about Haskell's 20 years, including references to various  incidents that occured

 

Benson Kirkman, the Deputy Mayor, proclaimed that February 23, 2003 would be Haskell Fitz-Simons Day



 

 

Dennis Rogers reminisced on Haskell's uncanny ability to cast him in all the great shows.

 

Becky Johnston did a parody of the Stephen Sondheim song, "I'm Still Here," from Follies

 

Four of RLT's Cinderellas came onstage and serrenaded Haskell (l-r): Martie Todd Sirois (played the role four times), Rebecca Meyers, Nancy Watkins Dimitrios, Lisa Gorman (the first Cinderella)

 

Rob Jenkins did a parody of the Gilbert & Sullivan song "Model Major General" from The Pirates of Penzance that listed all 125 shows that Haskell has directed at Raleigh Little Theatre.



 

 

Cate Foltin, spoke of the convoluted machinations everyone went through to keep this event a secret (telling him that tonight was our Casino Night fundraiser, when really its in May) and introduced the Governor's representative

 

Franklin Freeman, from the Office of Governor Mike Easley (and board member Lynn Freeman's husband), presented Haskell with the Long Leaf Pine Award, the highest civilian honor that the Governor can bestow



 

 

Bud Coggins presented Haskell with gifts from the Board of Directors (a pair of Birkenstocks, a gift certificate to Borders, the Deluxe CD set of Lord of the Rings and a case of wine). Judi also gave Haskell a combined gift from all the RLT volunteers -- $2000 in cash.

 

Clayton Jackson sang "Try to Remember" from The Fantasticks
